The internationally active workshop SPLITTERWERK was founded in Graz in 1988 and since then has established itself as a brand for fine arts with it's independent positions within contemporary architecture as one of the world's meaningful collectives. |

From the outset, SPLITTERWERK have worked with an expanded concept of art across disciplines, with projects incorporating paintings, installations, architecture, urbanistics and the new media that have paradigmatically explored the increasing interlinking of built spaces and media spaces. |

SPLITTERWERKs projects have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Sao Paulo Biennial, the Documenta in Kassel, the International Building Exhibition Hamburg, Vienna Secession, the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, amongst others. |

SPLITTERWERK and Friends present: Sir Peter Cook is dancing Mixed media installation with deliveries from Hamburg, Cologne and Munich “EITHER DO THAT OR SCRUB THE WHOLE TYHING” Peter Cook wrote “TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN”. It concerns SPLITTERWERK and the people curating, designing and organising the exhibitions for the project space. Typically for the almost thirty-year work of SPLITTERWERK, the architectural terrorists from Graz opt for “the third way”, as they have so often before: political, conceptual, difficult and, above all, risky. We have had a selection of wonderfully diverse exhibits transported from Hamburg, Cologne and Munich to Graz. Countless original prints and working models of varying formats, together affording a condensed view of Peter Cook’s work spanning more than five decades, await their presentation to the public at the SPLITTERWERK project space. We invited Peter personally, knowing him from his years at Graz’s Kunsthaus and the Kunstakademie in Stuttgart. Thereupon we received by email an exhibition proposal and a selection of projects consisting in large part of renderings and photos of CRAB buildings. With The Clever Treefrog the IBA presents the first building worldwide with a bioreactor façade. This janiform passive house designed by the architectural practice SPLITTERWERK is setting the scene with its two red-white-red-white striped sunny-sided algae bioreactor façades. They consist of glass elements suffused with water, in which micro-algae are bred for the purposes of generating energy, for light control, and for providing shade for the building. The algae used as a biomass for generating energy grow on the façade of the residential building. The façade also changes colour with the continued growth of the algae and thus appears to be “in motion”.
From afar, you can already read two giant speech bubbles with black letters against a white background shown on the two green shady façades with their tiny windows, the first bubble asking “Photosynthesis?” and the second replying “Cool!”. Whether it be Mies van der Rohe’s flowing space, Frank Lloyd Wright’s open floor plan, or Adolf Loos’s “Raumplan”, not to mention Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky’s economical Frankfurt Kitchen – their contemporary development is incorporated in the intelligent residential typologies of the “Case Study House” Clever Treefrog. In the adjustable structure of these new residential typologies, functional spaces can be alternately or simultaneously attached or detached on demand. The Loos plan thus becomes an individual and time-oriented living plan. The appearance of living space is dominated by user-oriented living requirements and changes of programme. Accordingly, “Smart Spaces” develop from the “Milan Apartment” with different typologies of reconfigurable floor plans. Links: IBA Hamburg |

Multiincident Shells are switchable structures that are enriched with events. The “Hamburg Apartment” in the Clever Treefrog is a Multiincident Shell which is informed by the functions and programs of dwelling. The area of this apartment is limited to 64 m²; of this area, 46 m² are a „functionally neutral zone“. The remaining 18 m² are filled with specific, domestic functions; each of these functions can be individually activated and separately extended into the neutral zone. In this way, it is possible to arrange the hall, the kitchen, the dining space and the living room, each of which is 46 m². SPLITTERWERKs Co-Gründer Mark Blaschitz, Edith Hemmrich und Josef Roschitz erachten ihr aktuelles Projekt „Arkaden Wies“ aus baukünstlerischen Gesichtspunkten in der Realisation in einigen zentralen Bereichen als gescheitert. Wir distanzieren uns von der die Bauphase begleitenden Planung und Beratung der Auftraggeber, der Entscheidung keine Örtliche Bauaufsicht einzusetzen und dem Dokumentationsmaterial, das sich derzeit im Umlauf befindet. Eine kritische Aufarbeitung des gebauten Projekts „Arkaden Wies“ mit einer Serie von Fotoarbeiten und Architekturzeichnungen ist in Vorbereitung und geht sowohl den Stärken als auch den Schwächen der Realisierung auf den Grund. Diese „Re-Virtualisierung“ des Gebäudes hat das Ziel die fließenden Übergänge zwischen Lüge und Wahrheit inmitten unserer Mediengesellschaft zu untersuchen und SPLITTERWERKs „The Failed Treefrog“ von der Realisationsebene wieder in die Projektebene zurückzuführen. |

The Blue Shell is a one room apartment in the Black Treefrog with the concept of the Multiincident Shell. |

Adaptation of an old farmyard, and a fire station. The existing building envelope is supplemented by a trellis, and a new envelope - completely detached from the outer - is constructed within. The program of daily life - kitchen niche, sleeping cove, bathing niche, etc. - is then integrated into the space in between. The new interior envelope is conceived as a continuously active media surface – Projections, enlarged picture screens or TV – that makes the spatial divisions into virtual phenomena. A 1:1 model apartment was built and tested by SPLITTERWERK in the spring of 2000 for the exhibition "The Foot in the Door" in the Künstlerhaus Vienna. |

PLANET PUNTIGAM stands for heterogenity, mixing according to use and a post-urbanistic increase of individualism. Instead of the class society of the last centuries, lifestyle and image characterize today’s society. This leads to a differentiation of the construction and property market according to target groups. The appearance and the use of thus developed living space are ruled by lifestyle, image and the respective design. An important aspect in this is the ability to combine these architectures and landscapes. In this sense, agglomerations in opposition to formal and social segregations may develop.
